We’ve seen a large increase (pun not intended) in enquiries for oversized apparel. Now what exactly is it? And why are people opting for oversized clothing?
The oversized look, however, isn’t simply about buying two sizes up. It’s elegant, well-tailored and structured clothing that struts “effortless fashion”.
Yay? Nay?
Well like it or not, it’s here to stay as many fashion brands have been jumping on the oversized bandwagon, and celebrities are snapping them up. And of course when that happens, the whole world is follows suit.
How on earth?
Now how did the oversize trend take over? Weren’t we all looking for “slim fits” and tapered clothing?
Well there are a few theories.
90’s fashion has made a comeback.
Baggy is back. In the 90’s we saw the rise of hip hop videos and baggy jeans take over our TV screens. And style often makes a return, fashion writers the oversized trend is here to stay 2021 and beyond.
Working from home.
The lockdown has, among other things, taught us to prfioritize comfort over everything else, making us choose comfortable, easy silhouettes over body-hugging clothes even when returning to the workplace.
Model Merrylin Boro agrees. “I think because of the fact that everyone had so much downtime to be in comfortable clothes, there will be a certain transition period where people will hold on to that and treat comfort as a first priority,” explains Boro, who herself “pretty much lived in oversized clothes during the lockdown.”
With the recent rise of body positivity, the oversized look eliminates conventional body stereotypes and measurements and gives people a more favorable view of their bodies.
Prominent entertainer Billie Ellish mentioned that the reason she wears baggy clothes is so that people won't be able to judge or sexualize her.
"That’s why I wear baggy clothes,” she said “Nobody can have an opinion because they haven’t seen what’s underneath."
